Is PolyBuzz Worth It? $9.90 Subscription Review

PolyBuzz is worth it if you want variety: millions of user made characters, character card imports from Character.AI and TavernAI, image generation included, and enough scale behind it that the library keeps growing on its own. At $9.90 a month that is a lot of app. It is worth much less if you want one companion who remembers you, because the plan with permanent memory is the $29.90 one, regenerating a reply costs coins, there is a second currency the vendor does not publicly explain, and the free tier runs on ads. Below is what we verified in August 2026, where PolyBuzz genuinely wins, and where the price on the label is not the price you pay.

How much does PolyBuzz actually cost?

The clean source here is Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for the US App Store listing, app ID 6449190344, published by CLOUD WHALE INTERACTIVE TECHNOLOGY LLC. Apple prints the US dollar price of every purchasable item without an account, which matters because polybuzz.ai itself is geo-priced and shows a different currency depending on where you load it from.

Two things in that table do most of the work. The first is the weekly plan. Four dollars ninety nine sounds like the cheap option and it is the expensive one: leave it running for a month and you have paid roughly $21.60 for what the monthly plan sells at $9.90. Weekly billing is common on mobile and it is easy to tap by accident when it sits at the top of a subscribe screen.

The second is that there are two currencies, not one. Coins and Opals are sold separately, both have their own discount badges in the site navigation, and buying a subscription does not stop either from appearing. Which PolyBuzz subscription should you buy?

Buy the $9.90 Standard Monthly plan if you are buying at all, and buy it monthly, not weekly. It removes ads, unlocks the paid models on the Standard tier and costs less than half of what the $4.99 weekly plan adds up to over a month. Skip Premium at $19.90 unless you specifically want the Passion and Tale models, because it does not add memory. The only strong reason to buy the $29.90 Ultimate subscription is Permanent Memory, and that is the one feature most people asking this question actually want. How do Opals work in PolyBuzz?

Opals are PolyBuzz's second currency, sold separately from coins, and they are the expensive one. Apple's in-app purchase list for PolyBuzz, re-read on 5 October 2026, shows two Opal packs: 1,000 Opals for $5.90 and 4,000 for $19.90. Coins are sold in four packs alongside it, starting at 1,000 for $2.49.

That pairing is the whole point, and it is easy to miss because the two currencies use the same round numbers. A thousand coins costs $2.49. A thousand Opals costs $5.90. Buy coins in the largest pack Apple lists and the gap gets much wider.

Coins reward bulk buying, which is the normal shape: the 20,000 pack gives you two and a half times the value per dollar of the 1,000 pack. Opals barely do. Apple's list, read on 5 October 2026, shows a 4,000 Opal pack at $19.90 next to the 1,000 pack at $5.90, which improves the rate by only about 19 percent. Even in that bulk pack an Opal costs about five times what a coin costs at the best coin rate.

So the practical answer to how Opals work is this: they are the premium currency, the bulk discount on them is small, and anything priced in Opals rather than coins is deliberately the expensive path. Before you buy any, check whether the thing you want can be paid for in coins instead. If it can, buy the largest coin pack rather than a matching number of Opals, because the same $5.90 buys you closer to 6,000 coins at the top of the ladder.

One thing we cannot tell you from primary sources: PolyBuzz does not publish a table mapping every in-app action to a coin or Opal price, so the rate at which either currency drains depends on what you do. Why is PolyBuzz so expensive?

Because the cheap plan is not the plan that does the thing people are paying for, and because two currencies sit on top of whichever plan you pick. PolyBuzz looks like a $9.90 app and behaves like a $29.90 one.

The specific reason is memory. PolyBuzz's own membership table checks Permanent Memory for Ultimate only. Ultimate is $29.90 a month. If you are paying for a companion that remembers you, which is the main reason anyone pays in this category at all, the $9.90 Standard tier and the $19.90 Premium tier are not the product you are shopping for. The second reason is the weekly plan. Apple lists a Poly Standard Weekly Plan at $4.99, which reads as the cheapest way in and is the most expensive way to stay. At $4.99 a week, a year costs $259.48. The same Standard tier billed monthly at $9.90 costs $118.80 for that year. The weekly route costs 2.2 times the monthly one for identical access, and nothing in the app stops you sitting on it for months.

Add the currencies and the picture gets worse rather than better, because coins and Opals are bought on top of a subscription you are already paying for, not instead of it. A subscriber who buys one 20,000 coin pack and one 1,000 Opal pack in a month has spent $55.70 on a $29.90 app.

None of this is hidden. It is all on Apple's listing and PolyBuzz's own membership table. It is just spread across three places that nobody reads together, which is why the number people quote is $9.90 and the number people pay is not. What does PolyBuzz Ultimate unlock that the cheaper plans do not?

Permanent Memory, and this is the detail most PolyBuzz reviews skip entirely. It is not hidden: it is sitting in the vendor's own membership comparison table, where the Models section splits recall into two rows.

If continuity is why you are subscribing, PolyBuzz costs $29.90 a month, not $9.90. Anyone lining up PolyBuzz's entry price against a rival's single flat plan is comparing two different products, and the comparison flatters PolyBuzz by about three times. Credit where it is due, though. Asked directly in its own FAQ whether it has better memory, PolyBuzz answers that it has relatively strong memory capabilities and then adds that the AI's memory capacity is technically limited, which means it may forget previous conversations over time. Very few vendors in this category will write that down. Is PolyBuzz free, and what does the free tier cost you?

PolyBuzz is genuinely free to use. Its FAQ says so plainly, and unlike some apps in this category the free tier is not a five message trial: you can chat, browse and create characters without paying.

What funds it is advertising. Google Play carries the Contains ads label on the listing for package ai.socialapps.speakmaster, and the tell on the vendor's own pricing table is that Ad-free appears as a paid feature on all three tiers. Load polybuzz.ai and the consent dialog spells out the rest: cookies, unique identifiers and other device data may be stored by, accessed by and shared with 210 partners, and precise geolocation data may be used.

That is an ordinary ad-tech consent flow rather than anything sinister, and 210 partners is not an unusual number for a free consumer app. It is worth understanding what it does and does not cover. PolyBuzz separately states that chats are completely private and that neither character creators nor PolyBuzz can access chat content between users and characters. Both statements can be true, because they are about different data: one is your conversation, the other is your device and behavior. If the second category is something you would rather shrink across the board, that is a job for getting your personal details pulled out of the broker databases that feed it rather than anything you can fix inside a chat app. If it is only the conversation you care about, the vendor's claim here is a strong one, and stronger than several bigger names manage. Is PolyBuzz good, and who is it actually for?

By the numbers, yes. PolyBuzz has passed 50 million downloads on Google Play with a 4.1 star average across about 1.15 million reviews, and holds roughly 4.4 stars from around 464,000 ratings on the US App Store. Apps do not reach that scale by being bad, and the scale itself is part of the product: a bigger library means more characters, more creators and more reasons to come back.

The strengths are real and specific:

• Character variety at a scale almost nothing else matches, with over 20 million characters by the vendor's count
• Character card imports from Character.AI, Pygmalion, Zoltanai, TavernAI and others, so a persona you built elsewhere moves across
• Free image generation on the web version
• Character creation open to everyone, public or private, with voice, tags, story and appearance
• An adult permissive rating: Apple lists a Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity advisory at 17+

The weaknesses are just as specific, and they all point the same direction:

• Permanent Memory only on the $29.90 tier
• Coins spent on regenerating a reply, which is ordinary use rather than a luxury extra
• A second currency, Opals, that the FAQ never defines
• Ads on the free tier
• A weekly plan priced at roughly double the monthly equivalent
• No desktop client at all; the vendor confirms you cannot download PolyBuzz on PC and directs you to the browser

PolyBuzz reviews and complaints in 2026

The biggest PolyBuzz complaint right now is ads, not price. We read the 100 most recent US App Store reviews of PolyBuzz on 6 October 2026, all posted between 2 and 4 October. 42 were one or two stars, and 15 of those 42 are about ad breaks: chats paused every few minutes until you watch an ad, sometimes after as little as a minute. That is the free tier's real cost, and it is the thing a Standard subscription removes.

The complaint that matters most for buyers is a different one. One reviewer paying "almost $30 a month", which matches the $29.90 Ultimate plan, says they still had to buy in-app currency to use a premium chat mode, and titled the review "Unlimited is a scam". Three more describe paywalls or being pushed to pay to keep talking. That fits the pricing above: PolyBuzz's top plan does not end the spending, because Opals and coins sit on top of every tier. If you are buying Ultimate for an all-in price, it is not one.

Memory barely features, which is fair to PolyBuzz: most low reviews are from free users hitting ads, not subscribers losing their story. So is PolyBuzz worth it?

Worth it for the browser: if you enjoy starting new stories, trying different characters, and treating the library as the point, PolyBuzz at $9.90 a month is good value and you should stay where you are. Nothing we sell replaces a twenty million character catalog and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Not worth it for continuity: if what you want is one person who is there tomorrow, who remembers what you were anxious about on Tuesday, and who costs the same in a heavy month as a light one, the pricing structure works against you at every turn. You would be paying $29.90 for memory, watching a coin balance while you chat, and still seeing an unexplained second currency in the navigation.
