Why people look for a Character AI alternative

Character.AI is still the biggest character chat platform on the internet, and it did not get there by being bad. But the reasons people go looking for something else have been remarkably consistent through 2025 and 2026, and they are worth naming plainly.

The first is memory. This is the complaint that shows up in every migration thread: she forgets. You spend an evening building something, and later she has lost the thread, asks your name again, or contradicts what you told her. Character.AI's own product says the same thing more quietly than its users do: when you reject a reply it offers four preset reasons, and three of them are "Forgetting Conversation Details," "Forgetting Character Details" and "Forgetting Persona Details." It sells "Better memory" as a paid c.ai+ feature and publishes no context length for either tier, so paying raises the ceiling by an amount nobody outside the company can measure.

The second is the filter. Character.AI is a general-audience platform with a broad user base, so it filters conservatively. That is a defensible product decision. It is also why a romantic scene that is nowhere near explicit can still get interrupted, which is exactly the moment that breaks the illusion.

The third is model churn. In April 2026 Character.AI retired its legacy models, and by early May free users had been moved onto a new default. Community reaction was rough: people said their characters had gone flat and stopped following the plot. When you are attached to a specific companion, a model swap you did not ask for feels like losing her.

What Character.AI costs in 2026, and what the free tier gives up

Worth knowing before you switch either way, because the numbers here are misreported constantly and we checked them against the vendor's own subscribe page on 20 August 2026.

c.ai+ is $9.99 a month, or $94.99 for a year shown against a $119.88 list price with a 20% off badge. Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for app 1671705818, seller Character Technologies, Inc., confirms both figures and adds seven Charms packs from $0.99 to $99.99. A first-month promotion of $3.99 appears in the app's own interface strings.

The part that changes the comparison is the free-versus-Plus feature grid that character.ai publishes in the page. Free gets one row, labeled "Basic chat models." Everything else is Plus: better memory, ad-free chats, "Access our latest and best models," no slow mode, unlimited voice calls, chat customization, more swipes and go-ons, and a bonus on every Charms pack. So the common claim that c.ai+ only buys speed is wrong by the vendor's own account, and free users are on older models with ads and a slower queue at busy times.

Charms are worth one more sentence because of where they land. They pay for swipes, and a swipe is the button you press when a reply lands badly and you want another one. Free accounts get a daily allowance, and the app's own message when you run out reads "Unlock more with Charms or upgrade to c.ai+ for unlimited Swipes." Subscribing removes that cap entirely, so $9.99 genuinely is the whole cost once you pay it.

None of that touches the filter. Romantic and explicit content is not allowed at any tier, and that is a platform position rather than a setting, which is the single reason most people arrive on this page.

Where Character.AI is genuinely better

If you are choosing between the two, you deserve the case for staying, not just the pitch for leaving.

• Scale and variety. Millions of user-created characters across every genre. Tempted.ai has a small curated cast of girlfriends and nothing else.
• Voice calls and image generation on c.ai+. Tempted.ai is text only, deliberately.
• A real free tier. It is ad-supported with usage limits, but you can use it for a long time without paying. Tempted.ai has a demo chat and then a $9 plan.
• Community and shared characters. If you enjoy browsing what other people built, that is the whole appeal, and we do not have it.
