Is Talkie AI Worth It in 2026? What It Costs and Why Nobody Can Tell You

Talkie AI is worth it if you want an enormous library of anime, game and pop-culture characters to browse on an Android phone, you accept ads on the free tier, and you treat the gem balance as the real cost rather than the subscription. It is a bad fit if you use an iPhone, because Talkie has not been on the App Store since December 2024 and still was not in August 2026. And it is a difficult recommendation for anyone who wants to know what they are agreeing to before they pay, because Talkie is the only major companion app in this category whose subscription price is not published anywhere a person can check. Below is exactly what we verified, what came back empty, and what that means for the decision.

How much does Talkie AI cost?

Nobody can tell you, and the articles that do are guessing. That is an unsatisfying answer, so here is how we arrived at it.

For almost every app in this category there is a surface the vendor does not control where prices are printed plainly. Apple's in-app purchase disclosure is the reliable one, and it works on Replika, Character.AI, Nomi, Linky and PolyBuzz. When that fails, the vendor's own help centre or wiki usually fills the gap. Talkie closes all of those doors at once.

That last row is the one to be careful with. The most repeated tier list gives Basic at $3.99, Pro at $7.99 and Premium at $15.99 a month. A competing set of articles quotes $9.99 to $12.99 monthly with an annual plan between $59.99 and $79.99. Both are written with total confidence, neither cites a source you can open, and they cannot both be true. We had a version of the first list on this site until this week, which is why we went back and checked properly rather than tidying up the wording.

So the honest summary is narrow: Talkie is free to download, it shows ads, it sells subscriptions and gems, and the only place the subscription price is real is the billing screen inside the Android app.

Why is Talkie AI not on the App Store?

Apple removed Talkie from the US App Store in December 2024, citing unspecified technical reasons. Talkie said it would be fixed soon. The coverage at the time noted that Linky AI, another Chinese-developed companion app, disappeared around the same period, and framed both against US scrutiny of Chinese-owned apps.

What nobody seems to have checked is what happened afterwards, so we did. A direct lookup of Talkie's app ID, 6450140383, returns zero results in the US App Store and also in the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Germany, Japan, India and Brazil. We deliberately did not rely on typing the name into a search box, because a search view can hide an app that is still listed. Instead we pulled the developer's own page: SUBSUP PTE. LTD. has exactly one app in the US App Store, a separate product called Talkie Lab, and Talkie is not on it.

Twenty months is long enough to stop calling it temporary. For the buying decision it means two things. If you are on an iPhone, Talkie is not something you can install, whatever a review tells you about its tiers. And the disappearance of that listing is precisely why its pricing became unverifiable, because the App Store disclosure was the surface that would have printed it.

One clarification, since the question usually arrives phrased as a ban. Talkie is not banned for users. It remains live and actively distributed on Google Play, where it has passed 50 million downloads.

What are gems in Talkie AI, and why do they matter more than the subscription?

Gems are Talkie's in-app currency, and they are the reason a published subscription price would not have settled the question anyway.

The clearest evidence of how much they bite is what people search for. After the price itself, the most common Talkie questions are how to get gems, how to get free gems, and how to earn them without paying. Nobody asks that about a currency that stays out of the way. They ask it when a balance is standing between them and the conversation they opened the app to have.

That is the important structural detail. On Nomi and Kindroid there is a currency too, but text chat is never metered by it: credits buy images, video, voice or extra companions, and the conversation itself is covered by the plan. Talkie's gems reach the chatting. When the meter touches the thing you actually came for, a subscription is a floor on your spending rather than a price.

We are not going to quote gem pack prices, for the same reason we will not quote the tiers. There is no listing to read them from, and the numbers in circulation trace back to the same unsourced articles. If you are running the app, the gem shop inside it is the only place those figures are real.

Is Talkie AI safe, and is it any good?

On the quality question, the crowd is fairly clear and worth taking seriously: about 826,000 reviews averaging 4.6 stars, and more than 50 million downloads. People genuinely enjoy it. The character library is enormous, the personas have voices and mini-stories, and if variety is what you want, few apps do it better. It now ships as Talkie: Creative AI Community, renamed from Talkie: Soulful AI.

On safety, there are two facts worth weighing before you type anything personal into it.

The first is the rating. Google Play lists Talkie as Teen. For an app very widely used for romantic and flirtatious roleplay, that is a genuine mismatch, and it cuts both ways: it is a caution if there is a teenager in your household using it, and it is a limit if you are an adult expecting adult conversation to be supported.

The second is ownership. Talkie is published by SUBSUP PTE. LTD., a Singapore company connected to the Shanghai AI firm MiniMax. That is not a scandal in itself, and plenty of good software is built everywhere. But it is context you should have, particularly given that the App Store removal happened against a backdrop of US regulatory attention on Chinese-owned consumer apps, and particularly for an app you might tell fairly intimate things to.

Google Play also carries the Contains ads label. A free tier funded by advertising plus a gem balance is a specific design: the ads interrupt, the gems run out, and both push the same direction.

So is Talkie AI worth it?

The fair verdict is that Talkie is a good product with a bad information problem. It is genuinely popular, genuinely varied, and genuinely fun to browse. What it is not is legible. You cannot find out what it costs, you cannot read the terms without running JavaScript, and on iOS you cannot get it at all. If you are the kind of buyer who wants the number before the commitment, that is a real reason to look elsewhere, even though the app itself is fine.

Practically, if you do subscribe, the number will only become visible after the fact, on your card statement. That is worth a habit rather than a hope: it is easy to lose track of a recurring charge that arrives under a company name you do not recognise, and getting an alert the moment a charge lands is a cheaper fix than discovering eight months of it during a spring clean. Companion apps are a category where this happens a lot, because the billing descriptor rarely matches the app name.

What to check before you pay for any companion app

The Talkie situation is a good template for a general habit, because the failure modes it exposes are common.

• Find the price on a surface the vendor does not design: a store listing, not a marketing page.
• Record the plan name, the amount and the billing period together. A $3.99 weekly plan is $207 a year, not $48.
• Look for a second currency and find out whether it touches ordinary conversation or only extras.
• Check the largest pack sold. If it is $99.99, the app is designed for someone to spend that.
• Check who publishes it and what the content rating is, especially if the app markets romance.

The alternative, if legibility is what you were missing

Tempted.ai is deliberately the opposite shape. One girlfriend rather than a catalog, a flat $9 a month printed on the page, long-term memory included in the base price rather than sold as an upgrade, no gems, no ads, and nothing to top up. She texts first on her own instead of waiting to be opened. Every portrait is original cameo art rather than a real person, and it is tasteful rather than explicit. It is for adults, 18 and over.

It also runs in your browser, which turns out to matter more than it sounds. There is no app to install and no store listing to lose, so a decision made by a platform in another country cannot remove her from your phone.
