Is Janitor AI Worth It? Janitor AI Cost, Janitor+ and API Costs

Janitor spent most of its life with no subscription at all. Millions of people used it, argued about proxy settings on Reddit, and paid nothing. That ended on 24 June 2026, when the company introduced janitor+ at $12.99 a month, and the question of whether Janitor is worth paying for became a real question for the first time.

It is also a question most articles get wrong, because the vendor publishes no pricing page. We read the primary sources on 23 August 2026 instead: Janitor's own announcement, its help desk articles on the subscription and the router, its beginner proxy guide, Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for app 6692609366, and the Google Play listing for com.janitor.ai. One of those turned up a cost that sits outside the subscription entirely.

Is Janitor AI worth it? The short answer

Janitor AI is worth it, and for most people it is worth it without paying anything. The free tier gives unlimited chats with an enormous character library, which is more than most paid companion apps offer. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month is worth it for one specific reason: it raises the context limit five times, from around 9k tokens to roughly 45k, which is the difference between a bot that loses the thread of a long evening and one that does not. It is not worth it for the cosmetics, and it is not the whole cost if you use the router.

What does Janitor AI actually cost in 2026?

Two primary sources agree, which is rarer in this category than it should be. Janitor's announcement post states $12.99 a month. Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for the official app lists exactly one product: Janitor+ Monthly, $12.99.

The word Monthly in Apple's listing is worth noticing. Apple only prints a billing period when the developer configures one, and plenty of apps in this category do not. When we checked Linky AI pricing last week, Apple showed both of its subscriptions with no period at all, which left the renewal term genuinely unknowable. Janitor does not have that problem. The period is stated, and it matches the announcement.

The cost nobody writes about: the router bills separately

This is the finding that changed how we would answer the worth-it question.

The janitor+ Router, in Janitor's words, "lets you use third-party AI models directly inside JanitorAI, without setting up an external proxy or pasting in API keys from another service." It is a convenience layer that saves you from configuring OpenRouter yourself. It is also a wallet.

Janitor states the billing model plainly: "If the router balance runs out, we bill you the same way we are billed by the provider. Your message generation may complete but you will be unable to make further API requests without adding additional funds."

So $12.99 is a floor, not a ceiling. If you subscribe and then use the router, you are paying a subscription plus pass-through metered usage, and how much that second number reaches depends on which model you pick and how much you talk. Janitor cannot forecast it for you, and neither can we. That is the nature of usage billing, and it is the reason people who run any kind of metered account tend to want an alert the moment a balance moves unexpectedly rather than a surprise at the end of the month.

One detail in that quote is quietly considerate: a reply already being generated may finish, and it is the next request that gets blocked. An empty balance interrupts you, but it does not eat a message halfway through.

None of this is hidden and none of it is unfair. It is simply a second meter, and an article that reports $12.99 as the total cost of a router-using subscriber is reporting the floor as the ceiling.

The $9.99 Janitor AI Pro plan does not exist

Search for Janitor pricing and you will find pages describing a Pro tier at $9.99 a month with unlimited messages and all LLMs, often next to an annual plan at $99.99. Several carry 2026 in the headline and read as though somebody checked.

Nobody did. Apple lists one in-app purchase. Janitor's announcement names one subscription. Janitor's own subscription FAQ describes one subscription, lists its five benefits, explains how to buy and cancel it, and mentions no annual option anywhere. Three primary sources, one plan, at $12.99.

If Janitor sold an annual subscription through the App Store, Apple would list it, because Apple itemises every subscription duration a developer configures. It lists one, and it is monthly.

The gap matters in dollars. Someone budgeting $99.99 for a year of Janitor is budgeting for a product that is not for sale. Twelve months of Janitor+ costs $155.88, which is 56% more than the invented figure. And a reader promised "unlimited messages" and "all LLMs" is going to be surprised twice: the swipe allowance on better models is limited, and Janitor does not publish the number.

We could not find that swipe count anywhere in Janitor's help desk, so we are not going to invent one either. If frontier-model quality is your reason for paying, ask support what the monthly allowance is before you subscribe. It is the single most important number about Janitor+ and it is the one number the vendor does not print.

Is the free tier good enough?

For a lot of people, yes. Janitor describes it in three lines: unlimited chats with millions of bots, access to standard chat models, and a "context limit of around 9k tokens."

Unlimited means unlimited. There is no daily message allowance resetting at midnight, which is more than several paid competitors offer. That is the honest reason Janitor grew the way it did.

The ceiling is context, and it is worth translating out of tokens. Around 9,000 tokens is roughly 6,000 to 7,000 words covering your chat history, the character card and the system prompt together. The card and instructions consume part of that before you type anything. Once you pass the limit, the oldest part of the conversation drops out of view, which is exactly what people describe when they say a bot forgot something it obviously knew an hour earlier. The second free-tier friction is queueing. Janitor+ lists "priority access for faster replies," which is the polite phrasing for free users waiting behind paying ones at busy times. That is why "janitor ai rate limited" is one of the most searched phrases attached to the product. Worth knowing: if you have connected your own proxy, a rate limit is more likely coming from that provider than from Janitor, and the two have different fixes.

Who should pay for Janitor+, and who should not

Pay for it if long conversations are the point for you. The 5x context jump is a real, measurable upgrade and it is the only benefit on the list that changes what the product can do. At $12.99 a month it is priced fairly against the category for what it gives.

Pay for it if you are constantly hitting the queue. Priority access is worth exactly what the waiting is costing you, which for a heavy evening user is not nothing.

Do not pay for it for the golden username, the checkmark or the comment emojis. They are pleasant. They are not $155.88 a year.

Do not pay for it if what you actually want is a smarter or less filtered model. That is the proxy route, and it costs less. Janitor's own beginner guide walks through OpenRouter, which gives 50 free messages a day on free-tagged models, and notes that adding $10 of credits raises the daily allowance to 1,000 messages. Ten dollars once, not ten dollars a month, and the credits stay yours. For a technical user willing to paste an API key, that is better value than any subscription in this category, ours included.

The catch is that it is genuinely fiddly. Janitor publishes a dedicated OpenRouter error guide and two separate beginner proxy walkthroughs, part one and part two. Companies write two beginner guides for the same task when a lot of people get stuck on it.

The app is a slightly different product from the site

Worth knowing before you install, because it affects what you are buying.

Apple files the official app under Books, with Entertainment secondary. Not Social Networking, where most companion apps sit. The listing is named Janitor: Interactive Stories, and the store description talks about romantasy, fanfiction and enemies-to-lovers slow burns without mentioning AI companions at all.

The content descriptors follow the same framing. Apple rates it 17+ and qualifies every descriptor as Infrequent/Mild, including "Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content and Nudity." Google Play rates the same package Mature 17+. Janitor keeps a dedicated help desk article on mobile app moderation, which is the clearest available signal that the app is moderated on different terms from the website.

On 23 August 2026 the official app held 4.0 stars from 1,460 ratings on the US App Store, and 3.2 stars from about 9,830 reviews on Google Play. Google Play discloses that the app has in-app purchases but, unlike the listings sitting next to it, publishes no price range for them.

One warning while you are there. Google Play carries lookalike apps using the Janitor name, some with more than a million downloads and no connection to JanitorAI, INC. The official developer states that theirs is the only real version of janitorai.com. Check the developer name before installing, and check it again before buying anything inside.

How Janitor compares with paying for a companion app

These are different products aimed at different people, and pretending otherwise would not help you decide.

Janitor genuinely wins on breadth. If you want to try a hundred characters this month, write your own, and share bots with a community, nothing we make competes with that and we would rather say so. Its free tier is also better than most paid tiers in this category.

The verdict

Use Janitor free. It is the most generous free tier in the category and it costs you nothing to find out whether the character library is what you want.

Subscribe to Janitor+ if, and only if, you keep running into the 9k context ceiling or the reply queue. Those are the two things $12.99 fixes, and they are real fixes.

Go the proxy route instead if you are comfortable with an API key, because $10 of OpenRouter credits buys more capability than the subscription does.

And whichever you pick, check the price against Apple's disclosure rather than against a review. It takes thirty seconds, it is the one page a vendor cannot quietly edit, and it is how we found out that the most widely quoted Janitor price on the internet is for a plan that was never sold.
