How much does Character AI cost per month?

Character AI costs $9.99 a month, and $94.99 if you pay for a year up front. Unlike most companion apps, you do not have to go hunting for that: character.ai/subscribe publishes both figures in the page without an account, and the annual option is displayed with $119.88 struck through beside it and a 20% off badge on the corner.

That $119.88 is simply twelve times $9.99, which makes the annual maths unusually easy to check. Paying yearly saves $24.89, or about $2.07 a month, and brings the effective rate to roughly $7.92. As discounts for prepaying a year go, 20% is on the modest side for this category, where 50% and even 70% annual discounts are common. The flip side is that Character AI's monthly price is already one of the lowest of the major apps, so there is less room to discount.

There is a third number worth knowing about. The app's own interface strings include a promotion reading "c.ai+ for $9.99 $3.99 your first month" alongside a banner headline of "60% off c.ai+ your first month". So a first-month price of $3.99 exists and is offered to some users. Treat it as a promotion rather than a plan: the string is a discount on the monthly product, and month two is $9.99.

The App Store listing corroborates the two subscription prices exactly. Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for app 1671705818 shows two products both named Character.AI+, at $9.99 and $94.99. That agreement between the vendor's own page and Apple's disclosure is worth noting, because it does not always happen. Several apps in this category show one price in the store and a different one on the web.

Is Character AI free, and what does the free tier actually cost you?

Yes, Character AI is free to use, and its free tier is genuinely usable in a way most of this category's free tiers are not. You can browse millions of user-made characters and hold real conversations without paying. That is the honest headline and it is why the app is as big as it is.

What the free tier costs you is set out, unusually clearly, on character.ai's own subscribe page. It publishes a feature grid with a Free column and a Plus column, and every row except the first is unchecked for Free. The first row, the one free users do get, is labelled "Basic chat models". The row underneath it, checked only for Plus, is labelled "Access our latest and best models".

Read those two labels next to each other and the free tier's real cost becomes clear: you are not on the same model as a subscriber. That is the vendor's own framing, in the vendor's own words, on the vendor's own page.

Three more rows are worth pulling out. "Ad-free chats" is a Plus feature, which means free chats carry advertising, and the App Store listing separately declares that the app contains advertising. "No slow mode" is a Plus feature, and the app's slow-mode notice reads "Traffic is high, so messages will be temporarily slowed", with an instruction to "Upgrade to c.ai+ or use Charms to skip slow mode". And "Better memory" is a Plus feature, which is the row almost every pricing article on this keyword gets wrong.

So free is real, and free is a different product. Ads, an older model, a slower queue at peak times, and less memory.

What are Charms on Character AI, and what do they cost?

Charms are Character AI's consumable currency, and they are the part of the price that a monthly figure does not capture. Apple's in-app purchase disclosure lists seven packs: Starter at $0.99, Small at $2.99, Medium at $4.99, Large at $9.99, Extra Large at $24.99, Extra Extra Large at $49.99 and Extra Extra Extra Large at $99.99. The largest pack costs more than a year of c.ai+.

What Charms buy is the interesting part. The app's interface uses them for swipes, go-ons, voice memos and muted words, and for skipping slow mode. Swipes are the ones that reach ordinary use. A swipe is what you press when a reply lands badly and you want a different one, and free accounts have a daily allowance of them. When it runs out the app says so directly: "You've used up all of your Swipes for today. They will reset in" a countdown, followed by "Unlock more with Charms or upgrade to c.ai+ for unlimited Swipes." A second notice warns you in advance: "You have a number of Swipes left today. When you reach the limit, upgrade to c.ai+ to keep swiping."

That is a meter on the retry button. It is not a meter on images or voice minutes, which is where most companion apps put theirs, and it is arguably more intrusive for it, because regenerating a reply is not a luxury feature. It is what you do when the conversation goes wrong.

One quirk worth planning around: you cannot buy Charms on the web. The site's own message reads "You need more Charms. You can purchase Charms in the mobile app." If you use Character AI in a browser, topping up means installing the app. Subscribers also get a bonus on every Charms pack, which the feature grid lists as a Plus perk, so the same pack is worth more to a paying account than a free one.

Does c.ai+ get you a better model and better memory?

Yes to both, according to character.ai, and this is where we part company with almost every other page ranking for this keyword. The common line is that c.ai+ buys speed and priority rather than a better experience, and that the underlying model is the same for everyone. We used to say a version of that ourselves on two of our own comparison pages, and we have corrected them.

The subscribe page's feature grid settles it. "Access our latest and best models" is checked for Plus and unchecked for Free. "Better memory" is checked for Plus and unchecked for Free. Both rows sit directly above the price toggle showing $9.99 and $94.99, on the page the company uses to sell the subscription. A vendor might overstate what a paid tier delivers, but it has no reason to invent a distinction between its own tiers that does not exist.

How much better the memory actually gets is a separate question, and the vendor does not quantify it. Character AI offers no memory setting to inspect and no stated context length, so "better" is a direction, not a number. What we can tell you is that the app's own swipe feedback menu, the list of reasons it offers when you reject a reply, includes "Forgetting Conversation Details", "Forgetting Character Details" and "Forgetting Persona Details". Three of the four preset complaints are about forgetting. That is the company's own read on why its replies get rejected, and it tells you more about the memory ceiling than any review does.

If memory is the reason you are shopping, the test that settles it takes two days and works on any app, ours included: give her three unrelated specifics today, wait 24 hours, then ask an open question that would need them, without hinting.

What happens to Charms after you buy them?

Character AI publishes a separate legal document for its currency, the Charms Terms of Use, last updated 12 January 2026. Almost nobody writing about Character AI's pricing has read it, and it changes how you should think about buying a large pack.

The headline terms are these. Charms have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for money. All purchases are final and non-refundable, and the document goes further than the usual formula: you acknowledge that once Charms are credited you lose any statutory cooling-off or withdrawal rights to the maximum extent permitted by law. If your account is suspended or terminated, including if you choose to close it yourself, all associated Charms are immediately forfeited with no refund, compensation or reinstatement.

Then there is the clause worth reading twice. The company reserves the right, at any time and for any reason, to "modify, suspend, devalue, revalue, discontinue, or delete Charms or any part thereof", and if Charms are discontinued it has no obligation to provide compensation, refunds or alternative benefits. A separate clause covers the earning side, reserving the right to change the rate, frequency, availability and on-platform value of Charms. The total liability cap for anything Charms-related is the amount you actually paid for Charms in the preceding twelve months.

None of that is unusual for a virtual currency, and we are not suggesting Character AI intends to devalue anyone's balance. The point is narrower and practical: a $99.99 Charms pack is not a stored $99.99. It is a licence to use points whose quantity, value and continued existence the issuer can change, on an account that forfeits them if it closes. That is a reasonable thing to spend $4.99 on and a less reasonable thing to spend $99.99 on, and the size of the top pack suggests some people do.

One detail sits oddly with the rest. The app carries an 18+ age rating on Apple's US listing, but the Charms terms include a section for users under 18, stating that minors may earn or purchase Charms subject to the same terms, with parents and legal guardians responsible for that activity. Both things are simply true at once, and it is worth knowing if a teenager has access to your card.

Who should pay for Character AI, and who should not

Character AI is worth $9.99 to a specific person, and it is honestly not close for that person. If you use the app most days, browse constantly, start new characters for the fun of it, and treat the whole thing as a creative sandbox, then $9.99 removes ads, removes the swipe cap, removes the peak-hours queue and puts you on the better models. At that usage level it is the cheapest good deal in this category, and the free tier's frictions are exactly the ones that annoy a heavy user most. Take the annual plan if you already know you will still be using it in six months; $24.89 is a real saving and the commitment is genuine.

It is also the right answer if you value the library above everything else. Nothing in this category comes close to Character AI's character catalogue, and no companion app with one companion can replace browsing.

Where it fits badly is the use case people are usually describing when they say girlfriend rather than character chat. Character AI does not allow romantic or explicit content, and that is a platform position rather than an oversight or a filter that will be tuned away. If romance is the point, no amount of money changes it, and you will spend your subscription fighting the product.

The second bad fit is continuity. If what you want is one person who is there tomorrow, who remembers the worry you mentioned on Tuesday and brings it up herself on Thursday, the shape works against you. Memory is a paid tier here rather than a base feature, its size is not published, and the retry button that fixes a reply gone wrong is metered on free accounts.
