So here is the money question answered properly. What Character AI costs in 2026

Character AI publishes a price, which already puts it ahead of most of this category. Its subscribe page lists c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and shows that annual figure struck through against a $119.88 list price with a 20% off label. The app also runs a promotion offering the first month at $3.99.

That was the whole story until this week. Re-reading Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for app 1671705818 on 24 August 2026 turned up two entries named Character.AI Lite, at $4.99 and at $2.49. It is not on the subscribe page. It is not in the help centre. It is in no pricing roundup we can find. Apple prints no billing period for either entry, so we are not going to guess whether those are monthly, weekly or promotional rates.

What it means for a buyer is straightforward: $9.99 is no longer the only paid option, so if the app offers you something cheaper inside the product, that is a real tier and not a trick. Ask what it drops before you take it. Cheaper tiers in this category almost always cut model quality, response speed at peak times, or the allowance for whatever the app meters. What Janitor AI costs in 2026

Janitor is free, and Janitor+ costs $12.99 a month. Two primary sources agree on that figure, which is unusual here: Janitor's own announcement post of 24 June 2026 states $12.99 a month, and Apple's disclosure for app 6692609366, seller JanitorAI, INC, lists exactly one item, named Janitor+ Monthly, at $12.99.

There is no annual plan. If you see a $99.99 yearly Janitor price quoted, it is invented; a year of Janitor+ costs $155.88. There is also no $9.99 Pro tier, despite how often one is described. Apple itemises every subscription duration a developer configures, and it lists one.

What $12.99 buys is mostly one thing: context. Janitor's free tier caps at, in its own words, "a context limit of around 9k tokens", and Janitor+ raises that five times, to roughly 45k. Context is how much of your conversation the model can see when it writes the next reply, so this is the difference between a bot that loses the thread of a long evening and one that does not. The second meter: Charms against the router wallet

Both apps sell something on top of the subscription, and they work differently enough to matter.

Character AI sells Charms, a consumable currency, in six packs from $0.99 to $99.99 through the US App Store. Charms buy swipes, go-ons, voice memos and skipping slow mode. They are optional in the ordinary sense: you can subscribe, never buy one, and the subscription still works exactly as advertised.

Janitor's second meter is a different animal. The janitor+ Router lets you use third-party models inside Janitor without configuring your own proxy, and it is a top-up wallet rather than a currency. Janitor states the billing model plainly: "If the router balance runs out, we bill you the same way we are billed by the provider." That makes $12.99 a floor rather than a ceiling, and how far above the floor you land depends on which model you pick and how much you talk. Anyone running a balance that drains with use tends to want a warning the moment the spend moves rather than a number they discover at the end of the month.

The honest summary: Character AI's extra spend is a choice you make in a shop. Janitor's extra spend is a meter that runs while you use the product.

The free tiers are not comparable, and that is the real difference

Janitor's free tier gives unlimited chats with an enormous character library and access to standard chat models, with no daily message allowance. The limit is context, not volume. You can talk all day for nothing.

Character AI's free tier is unlimited in messages but caps your daily swipes, which is the button you press to regenerate a reply you did not like, and it serves ads. Regenerating is not a power-user habit in this category, it is how you steer a conversation that has gone somewhere you did not want. Capping it is capping the main control surface.

So the correct comparison for most people is not $9.99 against $12.99. It is $0 on Janitor against $9.99 on Character AI, because a lot of Janitor users genuinely never need to pay, and a lot of Character AI users hit the swipe cap in the first week.
