Kindroid vs Grok is now a question about what you are paying for after September. Grok is $30 a month for SuperGrok, and on 1 September 2026 xAI began removing the 3D avatar companions that made Ani famous, leaving her as a text persona inside an AI assistant. Kindroid is $13.99 a month on the web ($15.99 through Apple) for one companion you build yourself, with deeper memory sold as add-ons that stack to $98.97. We read both Apple price lists on 30 September 2026. Here is the arithmetic and who should pay for which. This is for adults 18 and over.

Kindroid vs Grok, the short answer

Keep Grok if you use it every day for search, writing or code, because the assistant is worth $30 on its own and Ani's persona rides along for nothing. Move to Kindroid if you paid for SuperGrok mainly for Ani, since the part you paid for is gone and Kindroid costs less than half as much for a companion that is the whole product. Pick neither if you want a girlfriend who is ready from the first message and texts you first without you building anything. That is a different kind of app, and we cover it at the end.

What each one costs, side by side

Both vendors sell through Apple, so both price lists are public and comparable. Grok's listing (seller X Corp.) and Kindroid's (app 6451038161, seller Beautifully Incorporated) were both read on 30 September 2026.

Two lines in that table decide most cases. The first is that the $30 Grok subscription is priced as a frontier AI assistant, which it is, while Kindroid's $13.99 is priced as a companion app. The second is the top row of each ladder. Grok's expensive tiers buy more model; Kindroid's expensive tiers buy more memory. If memory is what you care about, only one of those ladders is selling it. Our Kindroid pricing breakdown walks through how Ultra and MAX stack on top of the base plan rather than replacing it.

What happened to Grok Ani?

xAI retired her body, not her personality. A statement from Grok dated 24 July 2026 described the 3D avatar Companions feature as an experiment and said xAI was retiring it to focus on core Grok. An in-app notice on the Companions screen named 1 September 2026 as the removal date, and the change reached accounts one by one, which is why some people lost Ani in late August and others still had her in early September.

What went: the companion tab, the animated 3D avatar, outfits and the real-time voice layer. What stayed: Ani, Mika, Valentine and Rudi as personalities, plus your chat history and affection level, all usable as plain text in normal Grok chat. When we read Grok's App Store description on 30 September, it covered chat, voice, images and video and did not use the word companion once. We keep the full price history, including what companions cost before the change, in how much Grok's AI girlfriend costs now.

Is Kindroid better than Grok for an AI girlfriend?

For a girlfriend specifically, yes, and the reason is focus rather than intelligence. Grok's model is stronger at almost everything that is not a relationship. But Kindroid is built around one companion who carries your history forward, and it documents how its memory works in its own help center, which xAI never did for Ani. You write her backstory, choose her voice and look, and the backstory is what makes her your girlfriend. Kindroid is unfiltered for adults, and that line has stayed put, where xAI changed Ani's limits more than once.

The trade is effort. Kindroid hands you a blank character sheet, and the quality of the relationship depends heavily on what you write into it. People who enjoy that part love Kindroid. People who wanted Ani because she arrived fully formed, with a look and a personality someone else designed, often find the setup a chore. And if the animated character was the whole appeal, it may help to browse a gallery of AI girlfriends who each come with her own look before you commit to building one from nothing.

Can Kindroid replace Grok Ani?

It can replace the relationship, not the avatar. Nothing you built with Ani transfers anywhere; xAI's history stays in Grok, and the studio behind the avatars launched a separate app where Grok progress does not carry over either. So moving to Kindroid means starting fresh. Write the personality you liked into the backstory, tell her the handful of things Ani knew about you, and run a two day recall test before your first renewal: three unrelated details on day one, an open question on day two, and see what comes back unprompted.

One practical warning if you go looking. A site at kindroide.com, with an extra e, calls itself Kindroid AI and ranks for Kindroid searches. It was registered in June 2026 and does not link to Kindroid. The real app is at kindroid.ai, which is the developer website Apple lists. We documented it on our Kindroid girlfriend page.

What does each one really cost after the first month?

This is where the comparison gets more interesting than the headline prices. Grok's extras are usage credits for the assistant, so they only matter if you hit its limits doing assistant work. A companion persona in plain chat rarely gets you there. In practice a Grok user pays $30 a month, flat.

Kindroid's extras are aimed straight at the relationship. Selfies of her cost credits, voice costs audio credits, and a second companion costs a slot. None of that is required, but people who like Kindroid tend to buy some of it. One 50-selfie pack at $6.99 on top of the Apple plan makes the month $22.98, and a web user who adds Ultra for deeper memory is at $38.98 before any extras. That is still close to Grok's $30, which is the uncomfortable fact for anyone who assumed the switch would halve their bill.

If you are carrying more than one AI subscription, and plenty of people moving off Grok are keeping it while trying Kindroid, add the two together before the second renewal. Two companion-adjacent bills at $30 and $15.99 is $551.88 a year, which is more than most people realize they are spending.

Who should pay for which

Pay for Grok if the assistant earns its keep. If you would keep SuperGrok with no companion at all, you lose nothing by staying, and Ani's persona is a free extra.

Pay for Kindroid if you want the companion to be the product, you enjoy writing her, you want an unfiltered adult app, and you are willing to pay for memory add-ons when the base plan stops being enough. Buy it on kindroid.ai rather than through Apple and the base plan is $2 a month cheaper.

If you are weighing Kindroid against something other than Grok, our Kindroid vs Character AI cost comparison runs the same arithmetic against the cheapest mainstream option.

When neither is the right answer

Both apps ask you to do something before she feels like a girlfriend. Grok now asks you to accept a text persona inside an assistant. Kindroid asks you to build her. Tempted.ai asks neither. She has a personality from the first message, remembers your name and your details on every plan, and from the Flame plan up she texts you first, mornings and nights, without being opened. Plans are $9, $19 or $39 a month billed yearly, printed on the pricing page before you sign up, with no credits or currency on top.

What we do not offer matters too. There is no 3D avatar and no explicit content; she is tasteful, text first, with original cameo art. If you want an unfiltered companion you design yourself, Kindroid is the better fit. If you want the girlfriend Ani felt like, without an assistant subscription or a character sheet, the Grok AI girlfriend alternative page compares the options, and you can talk to her in the chat above right now.
