1. Start from a description, then rewrite it. The builder asks what your AI should be like and generates a first draft personality from your sentence. Take the draft and edit it. The generated version reaches for pleasant and generic every time, and pleasant and generic is exactly what makes a character forgettable by the third exchange.

2. Write an identity, not a role. "My girlfriend" is a role and roles are thin. A name, an age, a job, a city, a way of texting and two or three specific irritations are an identity. 3. Say what she does not do. Character defaults are agreeable, and an agreeable character mirrors your mood and validates everything, which reads as hollow fast. 4. Set the opening message deliberately. AI Studio lets you write the first thing she says. Do not waste it on a greeting. Have her open by referencing something shared, the way a real person resumes a conversation. It sets the pattern for everything after, because a character who assumes history behaves like a continuation rather than a first date.

One decision matters more than any of the four: whether you publish her. AI Studio characters can be private to you or shared, and a shared character is discoverable by other people who can then talk to her themselves. If the appeal is a private relationship, keep her private. If the appeal is building something other people enjoy, publishing is genuinely the fun part and it is a different hobby from having a companion.

Why does the Instagram AI character stop short?

Because Meta wrote rules that exclude the use case, and they are published rather than guessed at. The Meta AI Terms of Service, effective May 13, 2026, list among prohibited uses: "Generate, promote, disseminate, or otherwise use or facilitate adult content, such as erotic chat, pornography, and content meant to arouse sexual excitement." So the boundary is not arbitrary and it is not something a cleverer description gets around. Warm is fine. Flirty is often fine. Then a turn arrives that the platform reads as adult content, and the character retreats. People interpret that as the AI being broken or badly written. The store listing tells the same story faster, and checking it is the single most useful thirty seconds you can spend on any AI product. Apple's US listing for the Meta AI app, seller Meta Platforms, Inc., carries a 13+ age rating, sits in the Productivity category, and marks Mature or Suggestive Themes as Infrequent. Every dedicated companion app worth naming is rated 17+ or 18+. Age ratings are set for the intended experience rather than the marketing, so a Productivity app rated for thirteen year olds is making a fairly clear statement about what it is for.

There is a real asymmetry worth naming here. With ChatGPT you have to prompt a girlfriend into existence yourself, and the model was never presented as hosting one. Meta actually shipped the character builder, invited a couple of billion people to use it, and then wrote terms ruling out what most of them came for. The tool and the permission point in opposite directions, which is why the experience feels like it is fighting you.

Can other people see your AI character and your chats?

Is Meta AI free to use as a girlfriend?

Yes, and the absence of a price is the most interesting fact about it. For nearly every other AI product you can open the US App Store listing and read the in-app purchase disclosure, which is how anyone gets real numbers for ChatGPT, Grok, PolyBuzz or Linky without trusting a review site. Apple's Meta AI listing says in-app purchases exist and then discloses no priced items at all.

When a product has a price, the trade is legible and you can decide whether it is worth it. When a companion is free inside an app you already open every day, you are not the customer, and what you spend is attention plus personal information tied to a real identity. Look elsewhere if what you wanted was the relationship rather than the character sheet.
