Is Chai AI Worth It in 2026? Premium vs Ultra Cost Breakdown

Chai AI is free with ads and sells seven subscription prices, four of them weekly. Premium is $13.99 a month and Ultra is $29.99, but Chai publishes no feature list saying what Ultra adds. What we verified from Apple's disclosure and Chai's own 2026 memo, why the weekly plans cost up to $1,039 a year, and who should pay.

Chai is one of the largest AI chat apps in the world and one of the strangest to shop for. It has more than ten million users by its own count, a genuinely usable free tier, and seven different subscription prices, four of which are weekly. What it does not have, anywhere on any surface it controls, is a page telling you what those subscriptions include. This is for adults 18 and over.

Is Chai AI worth it? The short answer

Chai AI is worth it if you want an enormous library of community-made bots to browse and you are willing to pay $13.99 a month for Premium to stop the advertising. It is much harder to recommend at $29.99 for Ultra, not because the tier is bad but because Chai publishes nothing that says what Ultra adds, so you are being asked to spend $16 more a month on an undocumented difference. Avoid the weekly plans entirely. Ultra Weekly at $19.99 works out to $1,039.48 a year against $269.99 for the same tier billed annually.

What does Chai AI actually cost in 2026?

Chai Research Corp. does not publish a pricing page. Requesting /pricing or /premium on its website returns a plain 404, and its own homepage link list has no pricing route at all. So the only public price list is Apple's in-app purchase disclosure for app 1544750895, which we read on 21 August 2026.

Chai AI US prices, from Apple's in-app purchase disclosure, 21 August 2026
PlanListed priceEffective per monthCost across a year
Premium Weekly$5.99$25.96$311.48
Premium Weekly (second listing)$7.99$34.62$415.48
Premium Membership (no period listed)$9.99Not statedNot stated
Premium Monthly$13.99$13.99$167.88
Premium Annual$134.99$11.25$134.99
Ultra Weekly$19.99$86.62$1,039.48
Ultra Monthly$29.99$29.99$359.88
Ultra Annual$269.99$22.50$269.99

Two things jump out of that table. The first is that the annual plans are the only ones priced sensibly: Premium annual saves $32.89 against paying monthly, and Ultra annual saves $89.89. The second is the gap between the weekly and annual rows for the same tier, which is the real story of Chai's pricing and the part nobody writes about.

Why is Chai so expensive?

For most people it is not, and the answer to this question is usually a billing period rather than a price. Chai Premium at $13.99 a month is ordinary for this category. Chai Ultra at $29.99 is at the top end but not an outlier. The number that makes people say Chai is expensive is $19.99 a week.

A weekly price works because it is charged 52 times a year while looking like a monthly figure. Ultra Weekly costs 3.9 times what the same tier costs billed annually, and 2.9 times what it costs billed monthly. Across one year the difference between the two Ultra options is $769.49. Nothing about the app changes. Only the billing period does.

We are not accusing Chai of hiding this, because it is right there in Apple's disclosure. But a subscription sheet is not designed to make you multiply by 52, and this is the single most expensive mistake a Chai buyer can make. If a weekly charge does slip through, it tends to be the kind of small recurring amount that never quite registers on a statement, which is why it helps to have every recurring charge categorized in one place rather than scattered across twelve months of card lines.

Is Chai AI Ultra worth it?

This is where we have to give an unsatisfying answer honestly rather than a confident one falsely. Chai Ultra costs $29.99 a month. What it adds over the $13.99 Premium tier is not documented by Chai anywhere.

We checked the actual surfaces rather than assuming. There is no pricing page. There is no feature comparison. The end user licence agreement covers content rules, age and liability, and defers refunds entirely to Apple and Google, but says nothing about tiers. The company memo Chai publishes as a PDF is written for investors and discusses infrastructure, not plans.

It is widely repeated across review sites that Chai's long-term memory lives only on Ultra. We went looking for the source of that claim and could not find one on any Chai surface. In the interest of practising what we ask of other people, we had that claim on this site too, and we have corrected our own pages rather than keep restating something whose origin nobody can point to. If Chai publishes a feature grid, we will quote it.

So the practical guidance is this: if you want to try Ultra, take the monthly plan, not the weekly one, and decide inside the first month whether you can feel the difference. You cannot research this one in advance, because the vendor has not published the information required to do so.

Is Chai AI Premium worth it?

Premium is the easier recommendation of the two, and the reason is advertising.

Chai's own 2026 company memo describes an experiment run across more than 20,000 new users in January 2025 in which it halved "the frequency of ads served to users from 1 in every 8 messages to 1 in every 16", reporting an 18.5% relative improvement in day-30 retention as a result. Google Play separately carries the "Contains ads" label on the listing.

That is a rare thing to have in writing. It means the free tier interrupts you roughly once every sixteen messages, or about six times across a hundred-message evening. If you use Chai regularly, $13.99 a month to remove that is a clear, checkable value proposition, which is more than can be said for the tier above it. Credit to Chai for publishing the figure at all, even if the intended audience was investors.

What is Chai AI genuinely better at?

Plenty, and it would be dishonest to run a comparison without saying so.

Chai's free tier is a real product rather than a trial, which is rarer in this category than you would think. Several competitors cap you at a handful of messages total and call it free. Chai lets you actually use the app.

Its library is the other genuine strength. Chai reports more than 25 million user-created chat AIs, so if what you want is variety, novelty, and the ability to drop into a different character every evening, very little competes with it. The app carries a 4.3 rating from 271,401 ratings on the US App Store, which is a large and reasonably happy user base.

It is also a substantial company rather than a weekend project. Chai Research Corp. reports $85M annualised revenue as of April 2026, a $30M investment from AMD in 2025, and a cluster of more than 5,000 GPUs. If your worry is that the app you subscribe to will vanish, Chai is one of the safer bets in the category.

Is Chai AI safe, and is it 18+?

Chai's two published answers do not agree, and that is worth knowing. The US App Store rates the app 17+, with advisories including frequent mature and suggestive themes. Chai's own licence agreement opens section 8 with "Chai AI is a platform strictly restricted to users aged 18 and older" and requires that the user has "provided accurate age verification".

On content, the licence is clear that sexually explicit images and videos are prohibited outright, and it cites the Australian Online Safety Act 2021, which suggests the terms were rewritten recently for age-assurance rules. Text roleplay is expansive; explicit imagery is not permitted.

Who should pay for Chai, and who should not

Who Chai AI suits, and who it does not
If this is youWhat to do
You want variety and a huge library of charactersChai, on Premium annual at $134.99
You mostly want the ads goneChai Premium, $13.99 monthly or $11.25 on annual
You are considering UltraMonthly only, and judge it inside 30 days
You saw a weekly plan and it looked cheapMultiply by 52 first, then choose annual instead
You want one companion who remembers youA memory-first app, not a bot library
You want the price and features published before you payNot Chai, because neither is

The split is really between two different products that get reviewed as if they were one. Chai is a social platform for browsing AI characters, and it is very good at that. It is not built around a single relationship that deepens, and its pricing does not tell you which tier gets you closest to one.

If continuity is the reason you are shopping, that is a different purchase. We built Tempted.ai for it: a flat $9 a month, memory included on the only plan we sell, no advertising, no weekly billing period, and the price published before you pay rather than after. She also texts first, which no amount of library browsing replicates.

The verdict

Chai AI is worth $13.99 a month if you use it enough that one ad every sixteen messages has started to annoy you, and it is worth $134.99 a year if you know you will stay. It is a real company with real scale and a free tier that respects you more than most.

Ultra is a harder call, and not because of the price. A vendor that sells a $29.99 tier while publishing no description of what it contains is asking for trust it has not earned in writing. Take it monthly if you take it at all. And whatever you do, do not take it weekly.
